MusicUmpire Interview | TO KILL A KING (Video)

Whilst singing beautiful melodies from their most recent self produced live six-track ‘Word of Mouth EP’ on trip around the United Kingdom, To Kill A King sat down with MusicUmpire TV during their stay in Leicester to talk about how they started and their most recent adventures.

After talking about visits back home, weird pork cakes at parties and drinking before gigs, To Kill A King discussed the first single with Communion Records and how they formed.

To Kill A King released their debut single ‘Fictional State’ on Communion in 2011. The song is about a couple deciding whether they should stay together after finding out they are pregnant. It was originally written as a duet with female artist and Ralph revealed emerging acoustic star Lucy Rose was singled out by the band for the duet, however it didn’t work out.

The band started off with Ralph Pelleymounter, Ian Dudfield and Josh Platman all meeting up as students at the University of Leeds where they formed a ska group with folky elements called Kid Id in 2009, after months of pushing forward as Kid Id, they decided to make a change, which resulted in Ian’s old school friend Jon Willoughby and their recording mate Ben Jackson joining the band in late 2009.

After their structure change they felt it would be best to change up their style slightly and rename themselves. They renamed themselves To Kill A King which was adapted from ‘A Night With Hamlet’ and decided through the five of them arguing at a pub. Prior to that they had picked the name ‘To Meet The Queen’, which later was dismissed after a good sleep about it. Ralph revealed at the time not all the members where convinced with the name ‘To Kill A King’, but now they all love it, plus they love and their fans also love their cool logo which is a king chess piece lying down, which Ben made.

To Kill A King are a chilled and soulful folk rock band with a slightly dark yet warm sound and image. Their debut album under Communion is being lined up for early 2013 and is being produced by allstar cast of producers which includes Jim Abbiss (Adele, Bombay Bicycle Club), Charlie Huggall (Florence and the Machine, The Maccabees) and Andy Green (Keane, Paolo Nutini). Therefore, they are certainly a band to look out for very soon.
