REVIEW: The Foreigners – Searchers of the Zodiac EP

theforeingners

The Foreigners are a hip hop rap duo from Brampton, Canada offering their own interpretation of the old school hip hop sound. Their EP: ‘Searchers of the Zodiac’ is a 5 track EP with features from The 6th Letter and Jyrome Good. Production on this project comes from Major, Jerome Cobain, Lord Dawm, J’vell Boyce and Suff Daddy.

The project offers lyrical content of a high standard that flows well over their solid beat selections such as sample heavy, ‘boom bap’ instrumentals which make for an enjoyable listen. The stand out is the track is definitely “For Your Mind” which has an infectious beat accompanying a nice hook which blends well with the sample. The melodies on this song are an easy listen and really carry the listener throughout the project.

What leaves wanting in this project is variety and dynamism; as the beats rarely change and the rappers’ intonation often stays the same, it is difficult for their quite articulate wordplay to stand out. At times also, the beats often seems to overbearing to the artists’ voices, thus they seem to lose themselves within the instrumental: the project would benefit from a bit more vocal experimentation.

All in all, ‘Searchers of the Zodiac’ is a good, concise EP which constitutes a great start for the rap duo, really great beat selection reminiscent from the 90’s era and good, thought out rhymes makes for a successful project. I’m interested to see how the duo develops there sound in the future.
